The workshops and break out sessions are one of the best things about the LTTG conference. I was unable to attend all the workshops due to physics and having to lead two of them. Luckily most of the workshops where recorded as an audio file and will be posted online once the quality is cleaned up.
Day One Workshops – “Environmental Service in Your Community”
When Em first asked me to lead a workshop about the LTTG ministry of the Vineyard Boise, I wasn’t sure how many people would come (especially considering all the other speakers at the conference). However, around 15 to 17 people showed up (not counting the 5 LTTG leaders) to hear what God was doing within our church.
[@more@]The workshop was simple enough – share a bit about what we are doing and then open it up for questions. Using that framework, each of the LTTG leaders had the opportunity to share their heart for the ministry God gave them. Some of the points raised were as follows:
- Be humble: the Church is coming to this game a little late. We need to be humble and just serve the community around us. As we do this, we will slowly begin to “earn the right” to speak up about different issues (including spiritual ones).
- If you volunteer to help out, show up!! It’s better to show up with one or two people then to not show up at all. The more consist you are, the more folks will trust you.
- Just do it! Start small, but do something – whether it’s picking up trash on the side of the road or at the local park.
I think it is worth mentioning at this point the three purposes of LTTG as it helps one to understand what we are doing and why.
- God said so – being good stewards of the land is a Biblical value
- Discipleship – This is a two part purpose:
- Education – teaching people how to be good stewards of the environment
- Among believers – by getting people together outside of the church building with a common goal (i.e. camping, picking up trash, ect), God has a chance to move among them within relationships.
- Evangelism – people who would never enter a church building can have the chance to hear the word of God in a non-threatening environment
